Engineering meets design in a transformative decade

The 1980s probably did even more to shape today’s world than the decade before. Everything changed – from fashion to engineering to politics. Including a much wider range of motorbikes on the market. Touring enduros, super-sports bikes, luxury tourers and soft choppers carved out new market segments alongside touring sports bikes and stripped-down universal models. They recharged the motorbike boom after its first wave and answered the dreams of the more discerning market.

In the 1980s, manufacturers, dominated above all by Japanese makers, ignited a technology explosion. Many details taken for granted today were introduced in motorcycle engineering back then. They include central shock absorbers, liquid cooling, lightweight metal frames, fuel injection, single-sided swing arms and full fairings. Other new technologies that characterised the decade but later disappeared were 16-inch front wheels, anti-dive forks and full side fairings.

There was also a previously unimagined new segment with models from 80 cc to 1,340 cc engines. They all flooded onto the market: from entry-level models such as the Yamaha DT 80 LC or the MZ ETZ 150 to top-sellers like the Honda CM 400 T, Yamaha XT 600 or the Honda CBR 600 F to innovative new departures such as the BMW K 100. Then there were the dream bikes of this generation, manifested by the Ducati 851, the Harley-Davidson Electra Glide and the Honda VFR 750 R. Trendsetters such as the BMW R 80 G/S and the Suzuki GSX-R 750 hit the road next to sensationally agile two-stroke bikes like the Yamaha RD 350 LC or the Suzuki RG 500 Gamma. Everybody can find their favourites from this decade.

The motorcycle special show at the Bremen Classic Motorshow 2025 will bring the stylish, exciting 1980s to life with 24 selected bikes. The highlights from the PS.SPEICHER and collectors from all over Germany will demonstrate how the motorcycle scene, trends and possibilities were transformed within a single decade.

About the Bremen Classic Motorshow: Since 2003, the Bremen Classic Motorshow has become established as the first classic vehicle trade show of the year in Germany. Over three days every year, collectors and grease monkeys, first-time fans and long-term enthusiasts, dealers and restorers, clubs and friends get together in the MESSE BREMEN halls to chat and talk shop in a relaxed atmosphere. In 2023, the classic vehicle show achieved a new record: with the organisers counting 46,407  visitors. Some 730 exhibitors from around Europe ensured a wide-ranging, varied programme. The Bremen Classic Motorshow team always brings a breath of fresh air and new ideas to the classic vehicle community. Its adaptability was again proven in 2021 and 2022 when the in-person show had to be cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic. Instead, they put together an online event in the form of a livestream. Another inspired idea was the new Red List category created for the Bremen Classic Motorshow. These are vehicles that were once common on the roads, but are on the verge of extinction today. Soon, the media and the community also adopted the concept and the new term. Since 2023, the BCM has been increasing its efforts to involve young classic vehicle fans.
