First Grand Prix car with 4×4 technology

The history of all-wheel drive with regard to performance already spans 100 years.

The Bugatti Type 53 was a marvel in 1931. Thanks to a Roots supercharger, the aluminum inline eight-cylinder engine produced 300 hp from five liters of displacement—using racing fuel. With alcohol-based fuel, it even delivered well over 400 hp.

Even though this car never competed in a single Grand Prix, the Type 53 achieved great success in hill-climb races, driven by racers such as Louis Chiron, Achille Varzi, or René Dreyfus.

In cooperation with the National Automobile Museum The Loh Collection, our special exhibition presents the only Bugatti Type 53 that has survived in its original condition.
