Auction “Oil & Rust”: Between Gas Station Nostalgia and Bidding Battles

When Marc Trapp talks about historic advertising, it quickly becomes clear that his passion goes far beyond sheet-metal signs and fuel pumps. Sparked during a stay abroad in the United States, his enthusiasm took him from flea-market visitor to founder of Wormser Classic Auctions GmbH — now Europe’s market leader for historic advertising, with up to 4,000 registered bidders per auction.

Following its successful premiere at the Bremen Classic Motorshow 2025, Trapp will return with his auction in 2026. The experience gained last year is being purposefully incorporated into an expanded concept: a larger area for extensive previews and visitor lounge spaces, accordingly more staff, and improved sound technology for broadcasting the live auction. The aim is to make the auction proceedings even more transparent and immersive — for seasoned bidders and curious first-time visitors alike.

A key highlight remains the distinctive atmosphere. The blend of personal consultation, in-depth expertise, and authentic “gas station nostalgia” clearly sets this appearance apart from traditional auctions. Visitors can not only see the items, but also touch them, ask questions, and learn about their origins, rarity, and how prices are determined.

The 2026 offering also promises excitement. The auction range spans from small oil cans to complete gas station inventories, with item values from the low three-figure range up to five figures. Among the standout lots is a Porsche 356 pedal car from the 1960s, featuring battery-powered lights and an electric drive — a unique piece from the Krupp family’s collection, estimated at €10,000.

Another highlight is a rare Continental enamel sign from the 1960s, with an estimated value of €20,000.

For Marc Trapp, however, it’s not just the top lots that create the appeal, but the stories behind the objects and the emotions of the bi dding battle. This very combination of history, passion, and live experience makes the 2026 auctions one of the standout highlights of the show.
